The Boy

I still remember the first time I took the Girl to the theater to see her first movie.  Since then we’ve built a father-daughter tradition of going to the movies together, just the two of us.  The Boy was too young to tag along but we always brought him back treats.  To him going to “the movies” meant Daddy and the Girl drove off somewhere and came back a couple hours later with Twizzlers and Skittles!

But today, I’m happy to announce, our tradition has changed!

“Are we still going to the movies?”  The Girl asked.
“Yes!”  I said.  “It starts in less than an hour so get ready.”
“Yipppieee!”  She shrieks!
“Oh! Oh!”  The Boy yells, hopping from one foot to the other. “Can me come?”
It’s a familiar question he’s asked many times before.   He understands the tradition and expects the usual answer but asks anyway.
“Yes, Buddy.  You’re three and a half now so you can come with us.”
“Me…me…me can come wit you?”  He asks in stunned disbelief.  Then he throws his hands in the air and yells “ME GETTING POPCORN!”  He bolts through the house yelling “Mommy!  Mommy! Me going to me first movie!!!”

Of course, the Boy has seen lots of movies on TV but never at the Movie Theater like a Big Boy.   Never with Daddy and big sister as he used to watch us drive off to the mysterious Movie Theater that rained popcorn from the ceilings and made Twizzlers and Skittles out of thin air!  This was a big deal.  It’s not everyday the Boy gets rock solid confirmation of his Big Boy status, so it was no surprise he was dressed and ready in 5 minutes.  Surely a Hammondville record.

We headed off to see Aliens in the Attic. Once we got the tickets we led the Boy to the snacks counter where he stood in awe of the huge glass case of popcorn and was rewarded with his very own bag.  He held it carefully like a bag of gold nuggets, taking careful steps not to spill a single one.  The Girl and I exchanged a glance and smiled as we proudly watched the Boy in his favorite one-size-too-big Batman t-shirt, clutching his precious popcorn bag and walking as tall as he could down the dim hallway of the theater.  Once we got our seats he was a little confused by the folding seats, just as his sister was three years ago, but being the movie veteran that she is, she sat first and showed him how it worked.  His little legs barely extended past the edge of the seat and he was too light to keep the chair all the way down.  It looked like it might just swallow him at any second so he just sat in my lap instead.

“Where’s the movie, Daddy!” he shouted in the theater, seconds after he sat in my lap.  A lady across the aisle chuckled as did the Girl and I.
“Buddy, you have to whisper in the theater.”  I told him.
“Oh, ok.” he whispered back.

The movie started and he got to business with the popcorn and soda.  I had to slow him down a couple times as he was guzzling the soda so fast.  Then, at a quiet part of the movie, out of nowhere, the Boy graced us with his impersonation of a fog horn by way of a ground shaking burp…” BAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRPPPPPPP!!!!“  The burp seemed to go on forever.  To the end of time.  Infinity times infinity!  I heard someone gasp on the far side of the theater.  I literally leaped a couple inches out of my seat and covered his mouth with my hand and sunk down in the chair.   I half expected to see the people in the theater running for cover with their terrified children thinking that the walls were caving in!  Surely, they would stop the movie, reveal us in the dark with a harsh flashlight beam and kick us out!   The Girl was next to me falling out of her chair with laughter.  Then I realized how odd I must have looked hunkered down in my chair, the Boy wide eyed in my lap with my hand still covering his mouth and we all started to crack up!  Thankfully, the Burp Police didn’t  show up.

“Bud,” I whispered, ” you can’t burp like that in the theater, ok?”
“Ooookkk,” he laughed.   “No burp.”
Ten minutes later he let another one rip but all we could do was laugh.

When the credits were rolling I led them outside.

“Did you like the movie, Bud?”
“Yeah, it was gate!”  He punched the air.
“You mean, great.”
“Yeah, gate!”  He punched again.  “Me saw me first movie like a big boy!”
“Yay!”  I patted his head.  “Now, we just need to work on your theater etiquette.”
